Post Date:07/01/2021 3:17 PM

Stamford has partnered with vendor HELPSY to provide residents with curbside textile recycling. Residents are now able to recycle unwanted textiles more conveniently by booking an appointment with the organization.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more than 84% of old clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, and textile items end up in a landfill or an incinerator. On average, that works out to about 85 pounds of textile items per person each year. As a result, textiles make up more than 6% of all the residential and municipal trash in the US.

In accordance with their policy outlined on the City of Stamford’s website , HELPSY will pick up clean, dry, and bagged clothing and fashion accessories as well as pet clothing, curtains/drapes, throw rugs, tablecloths/linen, towels, bedding, and comforters. They will not accept breakable house wears or glass, electronics, furniture, building material, mattresses, scrap metal, or phone books/magazines.

“I’m very pleased with the City’s recent partnership with HELPSY,” said Director of Recycling and Sanitation Dan Colleluori. “My department is always looking for new and innovative ways to make our recycling model more accessible and convenient for Stamford residents.
