Lyda Ruijter, Ph.D.

My varied educational and professional background has prepared me well for the wide range of duties performed by the City and Town Clerk. My experience in academia (Ph.D. Linguistics-UW-Madison) is valuable for interpreting the extensive state statutes that describe the duties of the office.

Setting up, growing and running a successful small business for 15 years has given me invaluable experience in managing the infrastructure of the office: budgeting, purchasing, HR, vendor relationships, customer service, community outreach and technology.

After I became an American citizen, I decided to become politically involved. Shortly thereafter, I was elected as a grassroots delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 2008, because of successful organizing for the Obama campaign.

As a Commissioner for Parks and Recreation I was instrumental in formulating a more targeted mission and initiated and carried through the development of a comprehensive set of policies for the Commission.

During my first term as Town Clerk, I have overseen the restoration of the original deed of Stamford from 1641, thereby establishing connections with the Native Americans who resided here before the European settlers arrived and who co-signed the deed.

I have also made substantial strides in creating a more efficient and customer friendly office. A new recording system recently installed will enable us to start streamlining record management on behalf of the city, including land records, vital statistics, public notices, election materials, minutes and agendas, appointments, and various other documents, which will then be easily accessible to the public to the extent allowed by law.

I have taken initiatives over the years to set up and participate in several projects concerning environmental, cultural and community issues.
