About the Seal

At the entrances to the city, welcome signs are posted that show the modern logo of Stamford highlighting the tall towers of downtown. The webpage for the mayor and her cabinet are illustrated with the same modern logo. Stamford is proud to be a modern city that looks to the future.

Lyda Ruijter's goal for the town clerk’s office is to be as vibrant, efficient, and modern as the image of the city conveyed by that logo. But in her office, she learned quickly the need to look to the future while recognizing the past. While restoring the original deed of Stamford from 1641 she searched and found the descendants of the original people of Stamford, which puts us in touch with the less glorious part of its history. The original seal of the city recognizes its original people, conveys our connection with the earliest settlers who arrived from England, and portrays the earliest forms of economic activity: trade by sea and industrial milling.

The Town Clerk is the keeper of the Seal of the City.

A seal is used to authenticate and certify documents of the city; this can only be accomplished if there is continuity and permanency in the design of the seal.

The original of the pre-1949 has not only not been seen in over 70 years. No one knows where it is or what became of it.

1949 new seal of the Town of Stamford

The City and Town of Stamford governments merge and the Board of Representatives hold their first meeting in 1949. After the consolidation this seal became the seal for all of Stamford.

“The assignment of the Seal to the Town of Stamford took place on April 12, 1916 in the office of the Town Clerk of Stamford. Thus ended a momentous and gratifying episode in the History of the Stamford Historical Society.”
