The annual FBI analysis report of crime statistics has been released for the calendar year 2020. 

The report indicates that the City of Stamford is the safest City in Connecticut and New England and one of the safest in the Nation based on population. Overall crime was down by 7 percent with 1,473 reported crimes per 100k residents from 2019 to 2020. 

“I could not be happier to have Stamford once again recognized as the safest city in all of New England by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s annual crime statistic report,” said Mayor David Martin. “The City of Stamford and our incredible Public Safety Departments have worked tirelessly to ensure that Stamford continues to remain one of the safest cities in the country.”

From 2019 to 2020, reported rape cases in Stamford are down 3.7%, robbery is down 2.3%, larceny is down 16.6% and arson rates have remained stagnant. 

“The City of Stamford is below the national average in every single measure of crime.” said Director of Public Safety Ted Jankowski.  “The reduction in crime is the result of a multifaceted approach through community outreach and social service efforts, the implementation of technology, and the great work of the Stamford Police Department. I personally want to thank the dedicated men and women of our Stamford Police Department for their hard work in protecting the residents of this great city and for making the city safer and more secure.”

Police Chief Timothy Shaw stated, “I would like to thank the exceptional men and women of the Stamford Police Department for their dedication and willingness to risk their own lives over the course of the pandemic to make Stamford such a safe city. Because of their efforts, I am proud to say we are one of the safest cities in the nation.”

Stamford is currently ranked 23rd nationally as one of the safest cities in the U.S. out of the 297 U.S. Cities that were included in the annual report. 

All included Connecticut municipalities with over 100k residents saw an increase in homicides from the previous year. Stamford saw the lowest rise in Connecticut, from 5 to 6 homicides in 2020, with each being solved with suspects identified. Seven arrests of individuals involved have been made, with only one arrest outstanding.

Connecticut’s other four large municipalities saw increases of between 2 and 8 homicides from 2019 to 2020, with Waterbury increasing from 5 homicides to 13, Hartford from 21 to 23, New Haven 13 to 21, and Bridgeport 17 to 24.

As a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, aggravated assaults statewide were on the rise with an increase in domestic violence nationally. The increase ranged from 15% to 67% with Stamford having the lowest increase in the state at 15%.
