New Blue Light Safety Towers in Latham and Columbus Park

Post Date:05/27/2021 10:50 AM

Mayor David Martin is pleased to announce the continued use of technology to increase resident safety and security with the installation of Blue Light Safety Towers in Latham and Columbus Parks.

We are open! With Stamford Parks and beaches open, we want our residents to safely enjoy all that Stamford parks have to offer.

“The use of technology to improve safety and security is so important,” said Mayor Martin. “Parks are public gathering places and are to be enjoyed by all. The blue light emergency phones with video security are a great crime deterrent and also provide quick 911 notification and rapid medical or police response during an emergency. As Mayor, my goal has been to ensure that adults, children and families are safe, and feel safe, in Stamford’s parks.”

To date, we have installed 11 Blue Light Emergency Phone Towers in our Parks, with the newest installations at Latham and Columbus Parks. Two more additional camera installations are planned for Jackie Robinson Park and Boccuzzi Park.

The Blue Light Tower installation sites are based upon park usage, topography, the number of 911 emergency responses within the past twelve months, and input from the residents of the communities.

The Blue Light Tower emergency phones are equipped with video security and are a crime deterrent.  They allow a caller to quickly communicate with 911 in case of an emergency. When a caller activates the emergency call button, they are immediately connected to the 911 call center via the camera and the microphone.  The 911 dispatcher can see the caller via the camera and communicate with them via the microphone. The Blue Light on top of the tower enables the Police, Fire, and EMS to quickly locate the caller.

Over the past few months, the Blue Light Towers have been utilized to request medical assistance from an individual injured in a car accident; a person experiencing a mental health episode; and a call regarding a suspicious individual. Because residents had access to a Blue Light Safety Pole, 911 dispatchers were able to dispatch emergency units to the scenes quickly.
