What is asthma?

Asthma is a lung disease that is common in children. Kids with asthma may have it for most of their life. If your child has asthma, it’s important to do what you can to prevent asthma attacks. Asthma attacks can cause wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. If you think your child might have asthma, talk to their healthcare provider, who can examine their lungs and check for allergies.

What causes an asthma attack?

An asthma attack can happen when you are exposed to asthma triggers, or things in the environment that can cause your asthma to become worse, like smoke, mold, or furry pets. Asthma triggers are different for everyone. It is important to know what your child’s triggers are and ways to avoid them.

Common Asthma Triggers: Tobacco smoke, dust mites, air pollution, cockroaches, furry pets, mold, cleaning supplies, and flu and respiratory infections
