TRAFFIC ENGINEER

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Under the general direction of the Bureau Chief of Transportation, Traffic and
Parking is responsible for designing and managing traffic safety program for the City of Stamford.
Responsibilities include overseeing the traffic and signal engineering teams, supervision of the pavement
markings, signs and traffic signals engineering and operational staff; data collection and analyses; project
analysis; project design and construction oversight; and, crash analysis. Prepares overall program plans and
budget requests, monitors expenditures, and administers the approved budget; does related other duties as
required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic
Engineering or a related field. A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in traffic
engineering and safety management with at least two (2) years previous supervisory experience and budget
management. A Master’s degree in Traffic or Transportation Engineering can be substituted for one (1) year of
experience.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: The Traffic Engineer is a professional engineer and has responsibility for the
management and operations of the City Street Smart Program, and other traffic safety programs.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Connecticut within 60 days of employment required.
  • Certificate of a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) is desirable.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
