Pursuant to Section 220 of the City of Stamford Charter and Code of Ordinances, and in accordance with the provisions of Section 8-215 of the Connecticut General Statutes, the City may provide for tax abatement to the owners of properties rented solely to low or moderate income persons or families. Such abatement is to be used to reduce rents or improve the quality and design of such housing or to provide related facilities or services.

A written request for tax abatement is made to the Tax Abatement Committee which is composed of the Director of Administration, the Corporation Counsel, the Tax Assessor and the Tax Collector. The Committee determines the amount of tax abatement that they recommend and forwards a proposed contract to the Mayor's Office and the proper City boards for review.

Annual reviews are held to determine if the premises to which a tax abatement has been granted remains eligible.
