 Washington Blvd Road Safety Audit

The Connecticut Department of Transportation has released the final Road Safety Audit (RSA) for Washington Blvd. This plan forms the basis of the City and State's next steps to improve safety on the corridor.

Washington Blvd Capital Construction Projects

The City has received State funding to formally build out improvements on Washington Blvd. The following two intersections have received funding for enhancement:

  • Washington Blvd and Main St
    • Raised intersection, new traffic signal, and bump outs
  • Washington Blvd and Richmond Hill Ave
    • Raised intersection

The City has $200,000 for formal design for other safety enhancements along the roadway.

Washington Blvd Quick Build Safety Projects

Building on the success of the Washington Blvd and Main Street Quick Build Pilot Safety Project of 2023, the City in partnership with CTDOT is installing the same type of enhancements at the following locations:

  • Washington Blvd and Broad St
  • Washington Blvd and Main St
  • Washington Blvd and Richmond Hill Ave
  • Washington Blvd and North State St

The project consists of the following components to improve safety:

  • Hardened centerline speed humps to slow left turning vehicles
  • Delineator bump outs to slow right turning vehicles, shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians, and improve visibility
  • Lane closures to shorten crossing distances

These treatments are being undertaken on a pilot basis to inform future capital construction to improve safety at this intersection. This is the first time treatments like this have been implemented on a State Road in Connecticut.
