West Beach Boat Ramp Update

Boaters Take Notice - West Beach Boat Ramp Update

 April 20, 2023

STAMFORD, CT - City staff met to review the logistics of the West Beach boat ramp construction with the Contractor, Terry Contracting to discuss closing the West Beach boat ramp for the season for its replacement.

We understand that the timing for the ramp replacement is not ideal based on those that use it for launching in the spring. We hope that this letter will clarify why the work needs to begin on May 8th.

The regulatory permit allows for the project dredging up to May 31st.  After which, the Contractor will be installing coffer dams and pumping to allow for construction work to take place in the dry to replace the entire ramp. As the work is taking place in a tidal zone, a coffer dam and pumping allows for the work to be continuous around tidal cycles but does not allow for ramp access during that time.

The Contractor’s schedule calls for the work to be completed in 6 months or in November 2023, weather permitting.

Starting the project any later in the spring is not feasible as the regulatory permit does not permit that and working over the winter is not feasible due to ambient temperatures below freezing impacting the ability to perform work as a result.

If the public needs to use the ramp this spring, they can do so between the date of this letter and up to Sunday May 7th. Otherwise, alternative plans to use other launch facility will need to be made. Please note the Cove Island Boat ramp is operational and with the partial dredging that was conducted this past winter, the channel depths are deeper as a result.
