Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

 

Read below to learn more about initiatives my administration is working on, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

Two years ago, I had the privilege of being sworn in as the Mayor of Stamford. On my first day, I outlined a vision to build a city that is more equitable, inclusive, innovative, and a place where everyone can thrive.

I just wanted to share our two-year report that was released last week, please take a look to see the work we have done together on behalf of the City of Stamford promote vibrant growth, secure a sound fiscal footing, and ensure that we remain one of the safest cities in New England. Weekly Local Business Spotlight: Connecticut Power Yoga

 

Each week I will highlight one of our incredible small businesses that received one of the 176 Stamford COVID-19 relief grants.

 

Connecticut Power Yoga located at 1372 Summer Street offers studio and Zoom yoga classes, and a 200 hour yoga teacher training course. The type of yoga practiced is Baptist Power Yoga which is designed to empower through movement, meditation, and active self-inquiry as tools of transformation and they define “Power” as “A measure of how quickly intentions are turned into action”.

 

Community Non-Profit Spotlight: Fairgate Farm

Each week I will highlight an invaluable local initiative that received one of the 21 Mayor’s Micro-Grants.  

  • Mission: To increase access to locally grown produce and to strengthen the community by celebrating healthy food through gardening, educational and harvest-related initiatives
  • Project Funding Purpose: To support the installation of a protective awning over the composting unit, and to purchase food scrap bins.

 

 

MAYOR’S UPDATES

  • Mayor’s Business Advisory Council: The Mayor’s Business Advisory Council met at Synchrony where we heard from Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner-designate Daniel O’Keefe and discussed ways to support Stamford’s growing startup community.

  • Modernizing 911 Emergency Operations Center: We have been hard at work continuing to improve our emergency management and response operations, including hiring state certified telecommunicators and enhance response times with the best trained professionals. CITY NEWS

  • Stamford Kindness Project: The Stamford Kindness Project will continue until December 25, 2023. Make sure to use #StamfordKindnessProject on social media to spread the word! Learn more here.

     

  • Shop Local Winter Guide: The City of Stamford recently launched its first Shop Local Guide! We encourage residents to use the guide during the holiday season to shop locally and support our small business. To view the list, click here.

     

  • Stamford Transportation Center Master Plan: Our administration has been actively meeting with the Connecticut Department of Transportation and city transportation officials to continue to make progress on the Stamford Train Station Master Plan. To view the Stamford Transportation Center Master Plan, visit: stcmasterplan.com.

     

  • Paving Update: The City of Stamford has announced 200 roads to be paved over the next several years as identified in the city-wide road assessment. The city-wide road assessment was commissioned in 2022 and conducted over the past year with the goal of determining an objective measure to establish a priority list for paving operations.   • Shop Local Spring Campaign: Are you a Stamford resident with a small business? We want to highlight you during our Shop Local Spring Campaign. Send your business details to calexander@stamfordct.gov

 

CITY EVENTS

  • The Stamford Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) is looking for parents, grandparents, guardians or other adults wishing to improve the lives of children, families, and communities to join the 2024 PLTI program beginning this January in-person. PLTI offers a highly stimulating curriculum that will boost participants’ leadership and civic skills to address such areas of concern as the opportunity gap, social emotional needs, accessible child healthcare, neighborhood safety, and the significance of parental engagement, to name a few. Together participants will emerge as strong leaders and advocates for all children.

December Virtual Taste of PLTI 2023

  • Walk-In Permitting Office Hours Extended: Walk-in permitting has been expanded! Walk-in permitting will occur every other Wednesday from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm in the 4th floor cafeteria of the Stamford Government Center (888 Washington Boulevard). The next walk-in permitting session will be on Wednesday, December 20th. For more information, click here.

  • Temporary Roadways at the Greenwich Ave and Pulaski Street Intersection: Temporary roadways are in place at the Greenwich Avenue & Pulaski Street intersection. Use caution, plan for extra travel time, and slowdown in work zones. Access to businesses will remain open. To learn more about the project, click here.

     

  • Connecticut Department of Transportation Stamford Station Construction: Construction continues at the Stamford Train Station, so please make sure to plan ahead. Passengers can find the updated train schedulehere.
