MAYOR CAROLINE SIMMONS DECLARES SNOW EMERGENCY FOR THE CITY OF STAMFORD

Stamford, CT – Mayor Caroline Simmons has declared a snow emergency, effective at 9:00 p.m. tonight ahead of the snowstorm expected to begin overnight and continue through Tuesday, February 13th. The snow emergency declaration will extend through 8:00 pm on February 14th.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for our area starting at 1:00 am on Tuesday, February 13th until 6:00 pm, with snow accumulation of 9-12 inches possible. Wind gusts could reach as high as 40 mph and could bring down tree branches. Hazardous driving conditions should be expected overnight Tuesday and throughout the day. Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads so that city crews can clear them. If travel is necessary, use caution while driving.

The Snow Emergency will require the removal of all vehicles on designated snow emergency streets. City parking garages will be open and free of charge starting Monday night at 9:00 pm until Wednesday, February 14th at 8:00 pm.

“Snow is forecast to begin overnight, with accumulation increasing through the morning tomorrow,” said Mayor Simmons. “We are declaring a snow emergency to give residents time to prepare and get their cars off the streets. Heavy snow is predicted and will make travel hazardous, and I encourage all residents to stay home to allow road crews to clear the streets. High wind gusts may lead to downed trees and wires and residents should be prepared and make sure you have a plan if the power goes out.”

Snow Emergency
During the snow emergency, snow emergency routes are to be kept clear of cars. Snow emergency routes are clearly marked with red and white signage. Vehicles will be ticketed and towed while the snow emergency is in effect. All city garages will be open and free to residents during the snow emergency, starting from Monday at 9:00 pm to Wednesday at 8:00 pm. Click here for a complete list of designated snow routes.

City Garages are located at:

  • Bedford Street Garage – 17 Forest Street
  • Bell Street Garage – 28 Bell Street
  • Summer Street Garage – 100 Summer Street

Garbage and Recycling

  • Scheduled residential garbage and recycling collection for Tuesday will be delayed one day until Wednesday, February 14th. The scheduled collection for the rest of the week will also be delayed one day, with Friday’s scheduled collection to be collected on Saturday.
  • In anticipation of the storm, residents should not put their Toters curbside tonight.

Alternate Parking Rules

As a reminder, on the streets designated below, alternate side parking rules will automatically take effect each time there is snow accumulation greater than two inches. The alternate side parking will take effect regardless of whether a snow emergency has been declared. The purpose of these rules is to facilitate snow removal by providing adequate maneuvering space for snow removal equipment on narrow roadways.

When in effect, on even numbered calendar days, parking will be allowed on the even numbered side of the street and restricted on the odd numbered side of the street from 8:00 am until 8:00 am the following day. On odd numbered calendar days, parking will be allowed on the odd numbered side of the street and restricted on the even numbered side of the street from 8:00 am until 8:00 am the following day.
