CITY OF STAMFORD AWARDED HISTORIC $17 MILLION RECONNECTING COMMUNITIES AND NEIGHBORHOODS GRANT FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

STAMFORD, CT – Today, Mayor Caroline Simmons announced that the City of Stamford received a $17 million Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the West Side Neighborhood Connector Project. This project will improve connectivity between the West Side, Downtown, and South End neighborhoods and the Stamford Transportation Center.

“This historic $17 million Reconnecting Communities grant will completely transform and enhance connectivity on the West Side of Stamford and establish a connected, walkable greenway from Mill River Park to the Stamford Transportation Center,” said Mayor Simmons. “My administration is committed to prioritizing investments in pedestrian safety and this grant will allow us to make critical investments in sidewalks, bump outs, traffic signal improvements, wayfinding, and green space which will improve accessibility and mobility for West Side residents to the Downtown, South End, and to the Stamford train station. I am grateful to the Transportation, Traffic, & Parking Department for their work in securing this grant and I look forward to working with community stakeholders to implement this visionary project.”

“The Transportation, Traffic & Parking Department is excited to receive this $17 million Reconnecting Communities federal grant,” said Frank Petise, Transportation Bureau Chief for the City of Stamford. “The West Side has some of the highest crash rates in Stamford and lacks easy and safe access to the train station and other parts of Stamford. Thanks to this grant, our Department will work closely with the community to improve safety and mobility for the West Side.”

The proposed improvements in the West Side Neighborhood Connector Project align with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Strategic Framework FY2022-2026 goals to address public health and safety, support environmental sustainability, increase equity, improvement critical infrastructure, and advance social justice. The funding will fill a 3,000-foot missing gap in the City’s greenway network, supporting the build-out of the Mill River Greenway between Tresser Boulevard and just south of the Metro-North rail tracks. This includes a 12-foot wide mixed-use path with enhanced lighting, and a direct connection from the Mill River Greenway to the Stamford Transportation Center.
