School Safety Active Shooter Awareness Sessions

This week, The Mayor’s Office, Stamford Police Department and Stamford Public Schools co-hosted three Active Shooter Awareness sessions for Stamford Public School staff, teachers, administrators and parents. As we head into the school year, protecting the safety of our children is our top priority and these trainings are important to make sure everyone is trained and up to speed on best practices in the event of an active shooter situation. Ensuring the public safety and well-being of our community, especially our students and teachers, is one of my top priorities and I want to thank Chief Shaw and Superintendent Dr. Lucero for their partnership in this important work.

Mayor Simmons Statement on Passing of Stamford Police Officer Douglas Robinson

Mayor Caroline Simmons released the following statement regarding the passing of Stamford Police Officer Douglas Robinson, who fought a courageous three-year battle with cancer:

“I am saddened to hear about the passing of Officer Douglas Robinson. Officer Robinson dedicated 33 years to serving the City of Stamford and had an incredible career, often going above and beyond the call of duty. His service to our community extended beyond his work as a police officer and he was committed to mentoring and coaching Stamford youth, touching the lives of so many. Officer Robinson’s family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

In honor of national Black Business Month, my team and I hosted a productive roundtable with small business owners in Stamford to hear their input and feedback on how we can support their business growth. We shared with them information on our upcoming small business resiliency grant, our work to streamline our permitting system, and our diversity, equity and inclusion work.

My administration is committed to creating a more equitable, inclusive, and vibrant City and that starts with making sure our economy works for everyone.

Exciting news! Thanks to the advocacy of Senator Richard Blumenthal and Senator Chris Murphy, SPEF - Stamford Public Education Foundation will receive a $250,000 earmark to deliver children’s literacy programming. SPEF is partnering with Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) to provide Stamford educators, families, and students with books and literacy resources to empower and inspire a love of reading.

Thank you to our federal delegation for their tireless advocacy in Washington D.C., for our community and to SPEF CEO Lindsay Wyman, RIF CEO and President Alicia Levi, and Stamford Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tamu Lucero for being champions for our students and leading this effort.

I look forward to working with all of these community partners to rollout this initiative and ensure Stamford students have access to quality literacy resources and educational programming.

The Stamford Public School’s CEP (Community Eligibility Provision) has been approved by the state. That’s great news for you and your children, as it allows Stamford Public Schools to provide free healthy breakfast and lunch at school to all students during the 2022-23 school year!

Parents do not have to pay anything or fill out any forms, nor do parents need to send children to school early for breakfast. Breakfast will be part of the school day. Parents do not have to do anything

The State of Connecticut’s Sales Tax-Free Week ends this Saturday, August 27.

During this one-week sales tax holiday, retail purchases of most clothing and footwear items priced under $100 are exempt from the Connecticut sales and use tax. The exemption during Sales Tax-Free Week applies to each eligible item costing under $100, regardless of how many of those items are sold to a customer on the same invoice.

This is just one platform where I will be sharing updates on a weekly basis, but you can also connect with me and my administration on the platforms below:
And of course, I will be out and about across the city every week visiting with local businesses, meeting with constituents, and hearing from stakeholders in our city – so I hope I’ll be able to talk to you in person very soon.

Have a wonderful weekend!
