MAYOR CAROLINE SIMMONS SIGNS CITY OF STAMFORD’S FIRST CLIMATE EXECUTIVE ORDER 

STAMFORD, CT – In recognition of Earth Day 2023, Mayor Caroline Simmons signed the City of Stamford’s first Executive Order Addressing Climate Change and Sustainability.

“This Executive Order builds upon the work my administration has accomplished over the past 16 months to ensure the City of Stamford is doing our part to take the bold action needed to reduce the impacts of climate change and protect our environment for future generations,” said Mayor Caroline Simmons.

Included in this Executive Order are measures to:

  1. Promote Energy Efficiency Measures at Buildings City-Wide: Require the Operations Department to report annually on energy efficiency improvements at city-owned buildings including expanding utilization of renewable energy and requiring the Land Use Department to enhance requirements for the Stamford Sustainability Scorecard for private sector buildings.
  2. Prioritize Green Infrastructure Projects: Require the prioritization of green infrastructure projects citywide to make Stamford more resilient to the effects of climate change.
  3. Expand the Food Scraps Recycling Program to Reduce Waste at our Landfills: Require the Operations Department to expand the food scraps recycling program and to promote it to residential and commercial sectors.
  4. Create the City’s First a Climate Action Plan to reduce carbon emissions based on the results of the City’s First Greenhouse Gas Inventory conducted in 2022: Require the City’s Land Use Bureau to provide a report to the Mayor’s office on the 2023 Greenhouse Gas Inventory (GGI) results and develop a plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in partnership with the Mayor’s Climate Council, Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) and other partners.  
  5. Establish the City’s First Electric Vehicle Strategy: Require the Operations Department establish a comprehensive electric vehicle strategy with the goal of increasing the installation of EV charging infrastructure and transitioning municipal vehicles to electric.
  6. Launch a Public Awareness Sustainability Campaign: Require the Health Department to launch a public awareness campaign to promote climate-friendly behaviors.
