Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

Read below to learn more about what my administration is working on each day to deliver for you, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

MAYOR’S UPDATES

This week we announced that the City of Stamford is launching Walk-in Permitting office hours at the Stamford Government Center. Residents are encouraged to fill in a survey ahead of time, but can then walk-in and ask questions regarding residential and minor commercial projects such as food businesses, cosmetology, barber, and retail food establishments.

During National Police Week this week, I had the privilege of participating in a Police Memorial Day ceremony honoring the brave men & women who lost their lives in the line of duty. Thank you to the City of Stamford police who work hard every day to keep our community safe.

In Case You Missed It: Our 2023-2024 city budget has been adopted, fulfilling our priorities for Stamford:

Mitigating Tax Impact from Property Reval: Extended the revaluation process for two years which will help mitigate the tax impact for residents as a result of the state-required revaluation.
Strengthening Critical Infrastructure & Pedestrian Safety: Authorized funding for essential services for residents, with a focus on public safety, health, and welfare, and infrastructure, including road and sidewalk paving and pedestrian safety projects.
Investing in Public Schools: Increased bonding authorization for school facility projects by about $28M and included $15M in reserve for schools; funding authorized for Stamford High, Julia Stark Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Davenport Ridge Elementary, Northeast Elementary, Newfield Elementary, and Rippowam Middle School.
Expanding Mental Health Support: Authorized funding for two school nurses at Strawberry Hill School and Rogers International to add more mental health resources available on school campuses to provide support to Stamford students.

CITY NEWS

Community Micro Grant Program: Applications will be open until next Tuesday, May 23, 2023. This grant has awarded small grants for community-specific projects aimed at improving the quality of life across Stamford’s neighborhoods. To learn more or apply, you can visit stamfordct.gov/microgrant2023.
Stamford Transportation Station Master Plan: The Connecticut Department of Transportation has released its two concepts for the Stamford Transportation Center. The open house will take place next Wednesday, May 24, 2023, from 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm, and you can visit Stamford Transportation Center Master Plan (stcmasterplan.com) to complete the survey.
Mayor’s Youth Employment Program: We are looking for hosts and sponsors of this incredible program which offers students access to paid employment in the private or non-profit sectors. This initiative provides Stamford’s youth with a “real world” perspective before they go to college and improves their skills to make them better workers both for this current job and future workforce opportunities they will pursue. City of Stamford Washington Blvd. Safety Study: To learn more visit the project webpage and to provide feedback complete the public feedback survey.

Parks Strategic Plan: The Mayor and City have launched the Parks Strategic Plan and want to hear from residents on how to manage and invest in the sustainability of our parks, beaches, and trails. Community Engagement sessions will be hosted on June 8, and June 15 via Zoom. Visit, www.stamfordct.gov/psp for more information and to fill out the survey.

CITY EVENTS
Mayor’s Climate Council: You are invited to join me for the Mayor’s Climate Council Public Forum this upcoming Saturday, May 20^th, from 11:00 am-12:00 pm at the Government Center to share ideas on climate action here in Stamford. Learn more here.

The Amistad: The Amistad has returned to Stamford until June 2. The Welcome Community event will happen on Saturday, May 13 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the Harbor Point Marina (1 Harbor Point Drive)

The Annual Childhood Fair: The Annual Childhood Fair will occur Saturday, May 27th at Mill River Park from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
The Stamford Memorial Day Parade: The Memorial Day Parade will be held on Sunday, May 28^th at 12 PM.
The parade steps off at 12:00 pm and follows the following route: Stamford Police Department to Veterans Memorial Park via Bedford Street, across Broad Street and continuing on Atlantic Street. The ceremony in Veterans Park will be held immediately following the parade. In conjunction with the Stamford Veterans Council, the Patriotic & Special Events Commission will be honoring Korean War Veteran Joseph Vasta, US Navy, by designating him as the Grand Marshal of this year’s parade.

Murph Challenge: Carozza Fitness is hosting its annual Murph workout challenge on May 29^th beginning at 9:00 am. All are invited, and there’s no cost but all are encouraged to donate to support the Catch A Lift Fund (https://p2p.onecause.com/support_cal_your_way/team/carozza-fitness), a 501c(3) non-profit that helps combat-injured veterans heal through fitness, wellness, nutrition, and community - over 9,000 and counting! All funds raised go to support men and women who have sacrificed so much.
Waterside Neighborhood Construction Projects Update: The Transportation Bureau and Engineering Department will hold a public meeting on May 23^rd at 6:30 pm at the new SoundWaters Academy Building in Boccuzzi Park to share updates on the Greenwich/Pulaski Roundabout Project and Boccuzzi Park Project. ConnDOT Stamford Station Construction

Construction continues at Stamford Station, please be mindful and plan ahead.
Passengers can find the updated train schedule here.

New Canaan Branch Line Improvement Work: Improvements on the New Canaan Branch Line will begin on Tuesday, May 30, and bus service will replace all train service. The track improvements and bus substitution are estimated to run through August.
- Upon completion, an existing speed restriction in the Stamford area will be eliminated and trains will be able to travel 20mph faster through this section. View the schedule here.
