Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

Read below to learn more about what my administration is working on each day to deliver for you, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

MAYOR’S UPDATES

  • We recently announced the City of Stamford’s Walk-in Permitting office hours at the Stamford Government Center. Residents are encouraged to fill in a survey ahead of time, but can then walk in and ask questions regarding residential and minor commercial projects such as food businesses, cosmetology, barber, and retail food establishments.
  • This week, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) held a public open house at the Government Center to share more information about the proposed Stamford Transportation Master Plan. The purpose of the public meeting was to provide the community with an opportunity to learn more about the project.
  • This week, I was thrilled to join Governor Ned Lamont, officials from the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP), Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo, and members of the Stamford and Greenwich state delegation to announce $270,400 awarded for the planning and design of a Greenwich-Stamford Multi-Use path. This funding will support the planning and design of a 2.6 mile multi-use path through Old Greenwich and the Waterside neighborhood, enhancing this section of the East Coast Greenway.

  • In Case You Missed It: Our 2023-2024 city budget has been adopted, fulfilling our priorities for Stamford:
  • Mitigating Tax Impact from Property Reval: Phased in the revaluation over two years which will help mitigate the tax impact for residents as a result of the state-required revaluation.
  • Strengthening Critical Infrastructure & Pedestrian Safety: Authorized funding for essential services for residents, with a focus on public safety, health, and welfare, and infrastructure, including road and sidewalk paving and pedestrian safety projects.
  • Investing in Public Schools: Increased bonding authorization for school facility projects by about $28M and included $15M in reserve for schools; funding authorized for Stamford High, Julia Stark Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Davenport Ridge Elementary, Northeast Elementary, Newfield Elementary, and Rippowam Middle School.
  • Expanding Mental Health Support: Authorized funding for two school nurses at Strawberry Hill School and Rogers International to add more mental health resources available on school campuses to provide support to Stamford students.

CITY NEWS

  • Community Micro Grant Program: Applications have been extended until tonight, May 26th, 2023. This grant has awarded small grants for community-specific projects aimed at improving the quality of life across Stamford’s neighborhoods. To learn more or apply, you can visit stamfordct.gov/microgrant2023.
  • Infrastructure Projects: Yesterday, I joined our Transportation, Traffic, and Parking Department for the groundbreakings of the Greenwich Avenue/Pulaski Street Intersection Improvements and the Lower Summer Street Promenade.

The Greenwich Avenue / Pulaski Street project proposes a roundabout to improve safety and reduce congestion at the existing all-way stop controlled intersection. It will include high visibility pedestrian crossings across all approaches and improve aesthetics and connectivity to the Stamford Transit Center.

The Lower Summer Street Promenade project will transform Lower Summer Street - one of Stamford’s premier dining and pedestrian areas - into a more pedestrian friendly space that allows for expanded outdoor dining, widened sidewalks, a dedicated bike lane, and the installation of wayfinding signs, lights, and a raised intersection.

My thanks to the Transportation, Traffic, and Parking Department for all their work to lead these important efforts, as we work to achieve our City’s Vision Zero goals.
