Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

Read below to learn more about what my administration is working on each day to deliver for you, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

MAYOR’S UPDATES

  • Advocating for Affordability, Fairness, and Inclusive Economic Growth in Stamford: Recently, I released an op-ed explaining why I have consistently advocated for preserving important tools in our City Charter that have been used for key infrastructure improvements, important education projects, and economic development in Stamford. I hope you’ll take the time to read it and understand why it’s important these tools remain in their current form, so that Stamford can continue to build a more equitable and prosperous future for all our residents. You can read it here!

  • CT Transit Stamford Awarded $26.4 Million for Electric Buses: Today, I joined Governor Lamont and the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) to celebrate CTDOT and the Stamford transit division receiving $26.4 million from the Department of Transportation for the purchases of 20 new electric buses and transit station upgrades for the CTtransit Stamford division. Stamford also received a $559,367 grant to install 20 EV chargers at the Stamford Government Center to further our sustainability goals to reduce our carbon footprint and electrify our municipal fleet.Mayor Simmons speaks as Gov. Lamont and State Delegation Officials look on

  • Resurfacing of the Rippowam Middle School Track: The resurfacing of the Rippowam Middle School track has started! The track circles a synthetic turf soccer field, and both the track and field are beloved and well-used resources for residents, nonprofit programs, sports training camps, and students. The project is ongoing and scheduled to be completed the week of August 1st. Until work is completed, both the field and track are temporarily closed. The work is weather dependent and the new surface requires a resting period, so while there may not be daily activity on the site, it is important that the field not be used. Any disturbance to the new surfacing during the resting period could ruin the underlayment or new surface, therefore we ask everyone to please stay out of the construction site for your safety and the success of this exciting capital improvement – the wait will be worth it!

  • Housing Opportunity Executive Order: Earlier this month, I signed an executive order that outlines key measures for adding or upgrading 1,000 affordable housing units in our city, including, expanding housing solutions for seniors, veterans, our workforce and reducing housing insecurity in our city.

  • Stamford Awarded Three State Resiliency Grants: I recently announced that the City of Stamford was awarded three grants from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection totaling $1.2 million for the Toilsome Brook project and the Heat Resiliency and Cummings Pond projects. These grants will go towards protecting our city and making Stamford a more climate resilient city.

  • Stamford Receives Significant Funding in State Budget: Stamford received an increase in Education Cost Sharing (ECS) funding for Stamford schools and secured nearly $300 million in reimbursement for Westhill High School and Roxbury Elementary School. Additionally, Stamford’s reimbursement rate for school HVAC improvements and outdoor athletic facilities increased to 60%.
