Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

 

Read below to learn more about what my administration is working on each day to deliver for you, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

 

MAYOR’S UPDATES

  •  Mayor’s Micro-Grant Community Highlight: Stamford Art Association (SAA)
    •  Mission: Our mission as an arts organization is to provide a forum where emerging and professional artists can exhibit their work and engage with other artists, community organizations and the public while providing art and educational programs.
    • Project Funding Purpose: Funding awarded to support railing replacement.
  • Small Business Grant Highlight: Sandwich Maestro
    • Established in 1998, the Sandwich Maestro has been serving up gourmet sandwiches, salads, and other delicious meals in downtown Stamford. Make sure to check them out and support this local small business!

       

  • Mayor’s Community Micro-Grants: Yesterday, we celebrated the 21 recipients of the Mayor’s Community Micro-Grants alongside the City of Stamford’s Director of Partnerships and Community Engagement and committee members. This year the City had $75,000 available for distribution towards specific projects in our City.

  • Jamaican, Ecuadorian, and Bolivian Flag Raisings: My team and I were proud to join the Jamaican, Ecuadorian, and Bolivian communities for their respective flag raisings!

  • Small Business Grants: I recently joined the City of Stamford’s Economic Development Director, Leah Kagan to announce the 176 recipients of the City of Stamford’s Small Business COVID-19 Relief Grants. Congratulations to all of the recipients and I look forward to visiting many of the businesses in the coming weeks!

CITY NEWS

  • Paving Update: Mayor Caroline Simmons and Matt Quinones, the City’s Director of Operations, announced the top 200 roads to be paved over the next several years as identified in the city-wide road assessment. The city-wide road assessment was commissioned in 2022 and conducted over the past year with the goal of determining an objective measure to establish a priority list for paving operations. The assessment was conducted by IMS, an independent and non-governmental pavement assessment company. The list of the 200 roads can be viewed here.

 

  • HT40 Shoulder Check Showcase: Terry Conners Rink hosted the HT40 Shoulder Check Showcase, which featured 30 professional players including Chris Kreider, Adam Fox, Barclay Goodrow, Jonathan Quick, and Mika Zibanejad of the New York Rangers, and over 2,000 people in attendance.

     

  • Board of Assessment Appeals: The next Board of Assessment Appeals for motor vehicles will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023, between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Please click here for more information.

 

CITY EVENTS

  • EyeRecycle Pop Up Event: The EyeRecycle Event will take place at Mill River Park on Friday, September 1st, 15th, and 29th from 11 am-2 pm redeeming 5¢ deposit plastic bottles, cans and glass bottles for cash.

     

  • Stamford Restaurant Week: Stamford Restaurant Week will continue through August 27th. To view the list of participating restaurants, click here.

     

  • HeyStamford Food Fest: The HeyStamford Food Fest continues this weekend, for more information click here.
  • Permitting Walk-in Office Hours Extended: Walk-in permitting has been expanded! Walk-in Permitting will occur every other Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the fourth-floor cafeteria of the Stamford Government Center, 888 Washington Blvd. For more information, click here. The next Walk-in Permitting session will be August 30th.

    Traffic

  • Temporary Roadways at the Greenwich Ave and Pulaski Street Intersection: Starting the week of July 31st, temporary roadways will be in place at the Greenwich Avenue & Pulaski Street intersection. Use caution, plan for extra travel time, and slowdown in work zones Access to businesses will remain open.

     

  • ConnDOT Stamford Station Construction
    • Construction continues at Stamford Station, please be mindful and plan ahead. Passengers can find the updated train schedule here.
  • New Canaan Branch Line Improvement Work: Improvements on the New Canaan Branch Line began on Tuesday, May 30, and bus service is replacing all train service. The track improvements and bus substitution are estimated to run through August.
    • Upon completion, an existing speed restriction in the Stamford area will be eliminated and trains will be able to travel 20mph faster through this section.

       

      COVID-19 Resources

  • Vaccination Sites: 1st and 2nd doses are available to all, booster shots for ages 5+ (Pfizer) and 18+ (Moderna/J&J)
    • Free vaccines can be received at 137 Henry St. Clinic on Tuesday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Please call 203-977-5385 for an appointment.

       

Other COVID-19 Information 

  • If you are unable to leave your home or are uncomfortable traveling to a vaccine site, please call the Stamford Department of Health at (203)-977-4378
  • Please visit the State of Connecticut's Vaccine Portal for information on how to request a new copy of your vaccine card.
