Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

 

Read below to learn more about what my administration is working on each day to deliver for you, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

 

MAYOR’S UPDATES

Each week, I will highlight an invaluable local initiative that received one of the 21 Mayor’s Micro-Grants.  

 Community Non-Profit Spotlight: Heart & Purpose

  • Mission: To transform the lives and paths of low-income youths through education and financial aid by providing scholarships, mentorship, and life skill programs that will help build the youth of today for a purposeful tomorrow.
  • Project Funding Purpose: Funding was awarded to support the August 19th Back-2-School backpack giveaway event.

  • Baby Bonds: This week, I welcomed Governor Lamont, State Treasurer Erick Russell, State Senator Pat Billie Miller and local community leaders and non-profits to highlight the Baby Bonds legislation.

  • Trinidad and Tobago Flag Raising: On Monday, I was pleased to join the Consul General of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. J. André Laveau, as well as members of Stamford’s Trinidad and Tobago community for the first flag raising of Trinidad and Tobago in Stamford.

  • Stamford Babe Ruth 16-18 Thunder Team: This week, we celebrated the Stamford Babe Ruth 16-18 Thunder Team who finished 6th in the nation in the Babe Ruth World Series.

  • Happy First Day of School: Wednesday marked the return to school for Stamford students. It was great to join students, teachers, and staff at Stamford High School to mark this occasion. I want to extend my best wishes to our students, teachers, and staff for a wonderful school year!

     

  • Walk and Talk with Mayor Simmons: Join me on Friday, September 8th from 2:45-3:30 pm at the Scalzi Park Splash Pad to discuss and share your feedback about Stamford Parks.

 


CITY NEWS

 

  • Paving Update: The City of Stamford recently announced the top 200 roads to be paved over the next several years as identified in a city-wide road assessment. The city-wide road assessment was commissioned in 2022 and conducted over the past year with the goal of determining an objective measure to establish a priority list for paving operations. The list of the 200 roads can be viewed here.

 

  • Board of Assessment Appeals: The next Board of Assessment Appeals for motor vehicle will be held on Monday, September 11, 2023, between 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Please click here for more information.
  • Access to Finance Event: Join me, the City of Stamford Office of Economic Development, the Women’s Business Development Council (WBDC), and Fairfield County Bank, for an Access to Finance Event on Wednesday, September 6th at 11:00 am at Old Town Hall, Room 203. 
  • Shop Local Holiday Campaign: Are you a Stamford resident with an online business? We want to highlight you during our Shop Local Holiday Campaign. Send your business details to calexander@stamfordct.gov.
  • Ferguson Library East Side Library Branch Survey: The Ferguson Library is soliciting community feedback regarding an East Side Library Branch. Click here to take the survey. 

 

CITY EVENTS

  • Permitting Walk-in Office Hours Extended: Walk-in permitting has been expanded! Walk-in Permitting will occur every other Wednesday from 9:30 am - 12:00 p.m. in the 4th floor cafeteria of the Stamford Government Center, 888 Washington Boulevard. For more information, click here. The next Walk-in Permitting session will be September 13th.

    Traffic

  • Temporary Roadways at the Greenwich Avenue and Pulaski Street Intersection: Starting the week of July 31st, temporary roadways will be in place at the Greenwich Avenue & Pulaski Street intersection. Residents should use caution, plan for extra travel time, and slowdown in work zones Access to businesses will remain open.
  • CTDOT Stamford Train Station Construction
    • Construction continues at the Stamford Train Station, please be mindful and plan ahead. Passengers can find the updated train schedule here.
  • New Canaan Branch Line Improvement Work: The New Canaan line service will restart on Saturday, September 2nd with the 6:20 am train.

     

    COVID-19 Resources

    All information about Stamford's response to COVID-19, including our case numbers, please visit: www.stamfordct.gov/covid19.

  • Vaccination Sites: 1st and 2nd doses are available to all, booster shots for ages 5+ (Pfizer) and 18+ (Moderna/J&J)
    • Free vaccines can be received at 137 Henry St. Clinic on Tuesday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Please call 203-977-5385 for an appointment.

  • If you are unable to leave your home or are uncomfortable traveling to a vaccine site, please call the Stamford Department of Health at (203)-977-4378
  • Please visit the State of Connecticut's Vaccine Portal for information on how to request a new copy of your vaccine card.
