Next week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week! May 5-11, 2024

The National Weather Service is providing educational and preparedness information for residents

Next week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week. Tropical cyclones are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena, and it only takes one storm to change our community. NWS New York, NY is Stamford's local NOAA office, and they are reminding us that now is the time for residents to educate themselves about what actions to take before the hurricane season begins, when a tropical cyclone is approaching, when it is affecting the area, as well as what to do after the storm leaves.

Once a tropical cyclone reaches maximum sustained winds of 74 miles per hour or higher, it is then classified as a hurricane, typhoon, or tropical cyclone, depending upon where the storm originates in the world. In the North Atlantic, central North Pacific, and eastern North Pacific, the term hurricane is used.

The National Weather Service, NOAA, and FEMA provide many educational, safety, and preparedness resources, and Stamford's Office of Public Safety encourages residents to familiarize themselves with the information.
