Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

 

Read below to learn more about initiatives my administration is working on, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

Extreme Heat Warning: Governor Lamont has activated Connecticut’s extreme hot weather protocol through 12:00 pm on Sunday, June 23rd. With high temperatures expected in our area, residents are advised to exercise caution when going outdoors. For more information on prevention tips and to locate cooling centers, click here

 

MAYOR’S UPDATES

  • Juneteenth Celebration: Our community rejoiced in the celebration of the Juneteenth holiday this past weekend with music, cultural performances, local food vendors and speeches highlighting the significance of the day. I would like to extend my gratitude to Carmen Hughes, the City’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Janeene Freeman, Director of Partnership and Community Engagement, Jacklyn Williams, and the members of the Juneteenth planning committee for their tireless efforts in organizing this event!

  • Frank Pepe’s Stamford Grand Opening: This week, I joined Governor Ned Lamont for the grand opening of Frank Pepe’s new location here in Stamford! We are excited to welcome this family-owned business and their pizza to our city. Make sure to stop by their new location at 64 High Ridge Road.

  • ShopRite Reopening: This week we celebrated the opening of the newly renovated ShopRite store location at 1990 West Main Street. The Cingari Family is dedicated to renovating all their Stamford locations to enhance the shopping experience.

  • 2024 State of the City: On Monday, July 8th at 8:00PM, I will be giving the City of Stamford’s 2024 State of the City address. Please join us at Government Center or watch the live stream available at http://www.boardofreps.org/.

 

CITY NEWS

  • Food Truck Friday: Join Mayor Simmons for Food Truck Friday on June 28th from 11:30 am – 6:00 pm at the Commons in Mill River Park (1050 Washington Blvd).
  • Lathon Wider Design Contest: The City of Stamford is thrilled to announce the Reimagine Lathon Wider Competition! The City is seeking innovative minds to develop a Civic Campus plan that will transform the Lathon Wider Community Center into the new heart of the community and renew the spirit of Lathon Wider for Stamford’s South End neighborhood. To learn more and to how to join the competition, click here.
  • Shop Local Spring Guide: The City of Stamford’s Spring Shop Local Guide is now available! Residents are encouraged to use the guide during the spring season to shop locally and support our small businesses. For more information, visit here.
  • Parking Garage Demolition: The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has initiated the demolition of the Stamford Transportation Center's 1985 Parking Garage and Pedestrian Bridge. For further details, click here.
  • Paving Update: Click here for the priority list for paving operations established in response to a city-wide road assessment in 2022.
  • Beach Passes Available for Purchase: Beach passes are now available for purchase online or in person. Parking permits are required at Cove Island, Cummings, West Beach, John J. Boccuzzi, Dorothy Heroy & Newman Mills Riverbank Walk Parks from May 1st through September 30th. Click here for more information and to purchase your pass.
  • Stamford Transportation Center Master Plan: Our administration has been meeting with the Connecticut Department of Transportation and city transportation officials to continue to make progress on the Stamford Train Station Master Plan. CITY EVENTS

  • Puerto Rican Flag Raising: The Latino Foundation will host a Puerto Rican Flag Raising on Sunday, June 23rd at 1:00 pm at Old Town Hall. See the flyer below for more details.

  • Books Across Stamford: The Stamford Public Education Foundation will host the Books Across Stamford at the Stamford Police Activities League (245 Selleck Street) on June 22nd from 11 am to 1 pm. See the flyer below for more information.

Employment Opportunities in the City

 

 Traffic

  • Mill Road Bridge: Please be aware due to unsafe bridge conditions, Mill Road is closed to traffic at the intersection of Old Long Ridge Road. Residents are urged to enter Mill Road from Rock Rimmon Road. Residents can click here for updates.
  • Lakeside Drive Bridge Replacement: As of April 1st, the Lakeside Drive Bridge is closed to all traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians. Please stay away from the construction site for your own safety. There is only access to the Aquarion Water treatment plant provided pass Quarry Road. For detour plans and more information click here.
  • Cedar Heights Bridge Replacement: The Cedar Heights Bridge is currently closed and is scheduled to reopen to vehicular traffic on November 2nd.
  • West Glen Drive Bridge: West Glen Bridge is currently closed for replacement, and the anticipated completion date is 12/1/2024
  • Connecticut Department of Transportation Stamford Station Construction: Construction continues at the Stamford Train Station, so please make sure to plan ahead. Passengers can find the updated train schedule here.
